Montrose Is For Dogs!

You’ve found the perfect destination to show your four-legged friend what vacation is all about.

Montrose is home to one of the most dog-friendly national parks in the country and is also the type of community that welcomes pups through the door with open arms and treats.

At the Black Canyon pets on leash may be walked on roads, in campgrounds, to the overlooks, and on some of the trails. Dogs are permitted at Tomichi and Gunnison Points and on the Rim Rock Trail in winter. Pets must be on a leash and are not permitted on the South Rim Ski and Snowshoe Trail.

There are some campground guidelines to consider when you are planning to bring your pup along. From approximately June to August, dogs are allowed in campsites, but may not be taken on walks (even on leash), and may not be carried around the South Rim Campground or on the Rim Rock Trail due to potentially aggressive deer protecting their fawns. Cerise Dog Park is an off-leash, 4.25 acre park area with separate areas for  small and large dogs. The dog park, open from sunrise to sunset, can be accessed from the parking area at Cerise Park or from the West Main Trailhead via a short walk south on the Connect Trail along the Uncompahgre River. The park offers a mix of open areas for fetch and play as well as woodland trails for owners to stroll with their dogs. 

The Connect Trail provides a continuous paved route from the north end of Montrose to the south, meandering along the Uncompahgre River and past multiple parks. You’re sure to meet many other doggy friends along the way!
