Montrose Gears Up for Summer’s Splashiest Celebration: FUNC Fest Returns Aug. 7–8
William Woody -
Come early August, the banks of the Uncompahgre River are once again expected to swell with paddlers, music lovers, families and vendors for one of Montrose’s most eagerly anticipated summer events. The City of Montrose has confirmed that FUNC Fest — “Fun on the Uncompahgre” — will take place Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8, 2026, continuing its run as a vibrant celebration of community, outdoor recreation and local culture.
For over a decade, FUNC Fest has carved out a reputation as a hub of high-energy water sports, live entertainment and small-town festivity. The late-summer weekend brings free music, a diverse vendor village and a packed schedule of river competitions to the Montrose Water Sports Park in Riverbottom Park and the Montrose Rotary Amphitheater.
River Events Take Center Stage
The festival’s heart is its water sports lineup — competition events that draw kayakers, stand-up paddleboarders and other water enthusiasts from throughout the region. Events such as the Riverbottom Downriver Race, the SUP and kayak cross races, and the quirky “FUNCy River Parade,” where participants craft themed floatable creations, combine athleticism with showmanship and community spirit.
Past editions have also showcased river surfing, boogie-board championships and playboating rodeos that transform the Uncompahgre’s currents into a competitive playground. With the river typically running strong in early August, organizers say they expect similarly compelling river action this year.
Music, Food and Community Flavor
Beyond the water, FUNCFest has blossomed into a broader community celebration. Food trucks and beer gardens line the park, offering tastes from local kitchens alongside craft beverages. Live music at both Rotary Amphitheater and Riverbottom Park augments the weekend feel: previous years have featured rock cover bands, local favorites and family-friendly entertainment from afternoon into evening.
Vendor booths showcase local businesses and nonprofits, while kids’ activities and family zones ensure there’s something for all ages. Organizers encourage residents to mark their calendars early and to consider volunteer opportunities to help keep the event running smoothly.
A Tradition of Summer Fun
City officials describe FUNC Fest as one of Montrose’s premier summer events — a chance not just to highlight the Water Sports Park, one of the region’s signature outdoor amenities, but to bring the community together in celebration of the outdoors and local culture.
With the 2026 dates now public, local businesses along with outdoor and water sports communities are already anticipating a banner year, welcoming both long-time attendees and newcomers to Montrose’s riverside celebration.
